The formatting of footnotes is governed by the Footnote Text style. You can change the appearance of all footnotes in your document by simply modifyingthe Footnote Text style.

Scroll down to find a particular version of Microsoft Word. Word for Mac 2011. Open a new document, select the Format menu, and click Font. Select your default font in the dialog box. Confirm with a Yes when asked if you want to change the default font characteristics. Hold down the shift key, click on the File.
Similarly, you can format footnote reference numbers by using the Footnote Reference style. It's a character style, so it doesn't affect formatting for theentire paragraph.
The initial setting for footnote text is Normal + 10 point. Therefore, footnotesare formatted in the same font that's in Normal paragraphs except that they're 10-point regardless of the Normal text size.
